Dear Fashionistas,

Despite the roaring thunderstorms the Fleurotica 2013 event was a packed house.  The spectacular event was hosted at the Contemporary Art Museum featuring Chicago’s only living “runway show’ with designs created solely with flowers and plants. The designs were created by Chicago’s most creative florists and horticulturists.

Doll Parts

Doll Parts

Dear Fashionistas,

Doll Parts Design is a fun, whimsical and  vintage inspired collection.  Michelle Dimitris founded Dollparts in the Spring of 2010 during an experiment with transforming vintage clothing.  The line consists of new designs fashioned from repurposed materials.

The top dress reminds me of The Great Gatsby era and the Windowpane Woven Skirt  was custom woven by a local Chicago artist, Emily Winter. ADORABLE!

Pieces like this make getting dressed more fun.

Shop Chicago Shoe Stores

Jeffrey Campbell Lucite Heel

Dear Fashionistas,

We have to admit, local shoe stores are hard to come by.  So, we are here to give you our top three picks. All three of these boutiques have a fantastic line-up of shoes.  Casual to black tie affair stilettos. Most of the time we all wear the in-between shoes.  We call this the “work” shoe and the “going out” shoe.  Not too fancy but enough flair to get comments.

Let’s face it, some of the shoe designs are a little excessive.  Un-wearable and flat out tacky.  So we picked out a few we liked that are comfy and stylish.

The top image is our favorite.  The Jeffrey Campbell sandal with a lucite heel.  Classy and trendy at the same time.  You can find these at Akira.  Akira is a local retailer that carries men and women clothing as well as foot wear.

Lola Cruz Gem Leaf

Lola Cruz Gem Leaf

We love this shoe from Lori’s.  It is perfect for work to going out.  The heel is perfect to wear all-day and  the detail of the leaf brings the platinum shoe to life. Loris shoes now carries apparel and a huge display of locally made jewelry.

Audley Shoes in Cognac

Audley Shoes in Cognac

Everyone likes a basic nude shoe. But we are gushing over these cognac heels at City Soles. It’s classic and chic and the heel is perfect for wearing all day at the office.  The color rocks with everything.  If you haven’t been to City Soles, we suggest you do.  They carry some really eclectic shoes that you won’t see anywhere else.  This shoe is modest compare to the rest of their lines.

I know it is easy to stop into Nordstrom, Bloomingdales or even Macy’s but try to stop by your local boutique owners. They have pieces that you are not going to find anywhere else.

Scofflaw, Chicago’s Newest Hipster Gin Bar and Restaurant

POSTED ON : May 27, 2013 | Posted in Chic Cuisine, Fashionista Chicago

Scofflaw Gin

Dear Fashionistas,

We visited the much talked about Gin Joint last night to see what all the hype was really all about. Scofflaw opened with co-owner Danny Shapiro who has some serious cocktail cred.  Moved over from the Whistler as a big shot mixologist and opened one of the most popular taverns in Chi-town.  This joint isn’t another Logan Square wannabe speakeasy-esque bar.  But an unpretentious relaxed prohibition vibe and foodie delight.

Super friendly bartenders really know their locally conscious produced spirits and offers you a shot to try if you are in question. We went straight for the Pellet Gun made with Broker’s Gin, Cynar, Jarritos Strawberry Soda, Peychaud’s Bitters, lemon, cucumber. It ROCKED.  If you weren’t ever a Gin lover before, you will be now.

Pellet Gun

We were starving and got a table within 15 minutes while waiting at the bar. (go early. no RSVP. hence, a line!) The menu was very favorable and seasonal which is key to my local-vore tastes. I went straight for the clam chowder and split delish seasoned fries with one of my best buds. Others ordered the spring time risotto, and the brisket sammy that melted in your mouth.  Every single dish was as amazing as the next.  We were all impressed with the plate presentation as well as the right amount of spice that just put your taste buds in over-drive.

Summer Time Fashion and Ice Cream

POSTED ON : May 22, 2013 | Posted in Chic Cuisine, Fashionista Chicago

icecream

Dear Fashionistas,

Nothing goes better than summer and ice cream.  With summer on it’s way, we couldn’t help but pair our favorite flavors with a few stylish pieces to get you to your nearest ice cream parlor.

Just yesterday we stopped into one of our favorite Chicago gelato stores, Black Dog.  Jessica Oloroso has been making gourmet gelato and sorbet with unusual combinations of flavors for three years, selling it through restaurants such as Socca and Uncommon Ground before opening her own store, Black Dog Gelato, at 859 N. Damen Ave.

As we were indulging in our double scoop gelato and sorbet combo, I realized that the colors we are wearing this summer match the colors and flavors of my ice cream!  Voila!  I was inspired to write a post about a local gelato store and stylish pieces you can purchase here in Chicago.

  1. Orange Sorbet matches well with Ted Bakers orange striped pleated dress.
  2. Rainbow Sorbet matches well with Kate Spades Saturday’s collections cropped-tie top.
  3. Mocha Gelato matches well with Coach’s leather gathered zip clutch.

Perfect!  Now go get some Ice Cream!!

COACH CELEBRATES STEP UP WOMEN’S NETWORK AND UNVEILS A NEW SHOE COLLECTION IN CHICAGO

POSTED ON : May 3, 2013 | Posted in Chicago Shopping, Fashionista Chicago

Coach and Step Up Women's Network

Dear Fashionistas,

Coach launched a new shoe collection in Chicago that will certainly set you up for a stylish spring season.  When is that again?  The Michigan Avenue store shows off smart heel lengths to accommodate every taste with details of woven straps or tassel hanging adornments. My favorite is the pair below. The Steffi Heel!

Woven heels

To launch the new collection, Coach had a stylish bunch over for breakfast.  We drank fresh squeezed apple and cucumber juice while shopping the award-winning collection.  It was such a nice way to wake up.  Is there anything better than having breakfast at Coach? I’ll have seconds please!

Stylish Group

But Coach also partnered with a wonderful non-profit, Step up Women’s Network.  They are a nonprofit membership organization igniting women & girls to fulfill their potential.  They empower teen girls from under-resourced communities to be confident, college-bound, and career-ready, and propel professional women through connections, collaborations, and continuous development. This partnership made the breakfast so much nicer.  I left with shoes and inspiration!

We hope you are inspired to check out Coach’s new shoe collection.  If you like Coach bags, you will fall in love with their shoes!

Marie Claire “Power of Presence” Lunch With Editor-in-Chief Anne Fulenwider and Publisher Nancy Berger Cardone

POSTED ON : April 12, 2013 | Posted in Chic Cuisine, Fashionista Chicago

The Power of Presence

Power Of Presence Lunch

Alpana Singh, Brittney Payton, Corri McFadden, Anne Fulenwider, Nancy Berger Cardone

Dear Fashionistas,

We couldn’t have been more thrilled to be invited to the “Power of Presence” luncheon hosted by the ever-popular style magazine, Marie Claire yesterday.  Even though the weather was undesirable, these power-driven women certainly didn’t let a little bit of thunder, lightening and down pour stop them.  Which coincidentally is the reason why the luncheon was created; to talk about shattering the glass ceiling and how to keep moving forward.

Anne Fulenwider, Marie Clair Editor and Chief mentioned they held the same luncheon in New York and realized putting together a group of powerful women with entrepreneur personalities was a smart idea to help spread the word that women do have a Powerful Presence.  Chicago was next and to start with a bang, the lunch was held at The Boarding House which recently opened by Alpana Sing, the longtime face of WTTW’s restaurant review show CheckPlease.
Now the sommelier and proprietress of the Boarding House (720 N. Wells St., 312-280-0720). Talk about Shattering the Glass Ceiling.  Wait until you see the hundreds of glasses hanging from the ceiling!

The other fab women leading the lunch time discussion was Brittney Payton Co-host for Chicago Best and Corri McFadden, Owner of eDrop Off.  They each gave us a boost of confidence and knocked down some of mis-conceived notions.

Nancy Berger Cardone, Marie Claire VP/Publisher is kind of a Big Deal!  She’s worked for magazines such as Allure, Gourmet, and Vanity Fair to name a few. But meeting her and talking with her I felt like she was my best friend from 8th grade.  However, I think she may know a thing or two more than my tree climbing BFF.

Marie Claire

Thank you Marie Claire for giving Fashionista Chicago the opportunity to share this fabulous lunch with you and all the talented entrepreneurs in Chicago. #SupportLocal #SupportWomen, #ShatteringTheGlassCeiling.

Our Favorite Product We Are Obsessed With. Pureology!

Our Favorite Product We Are Obsessed With. Pureology!

Dear Fashionistas,

We have been fans of Luxe Salon and Spa for years now.  Located in Roscoe Village, this talented group really makes you feel at home and beautiful. The duo Ella and Elizabeth are the two owners who shine behind this boutique salon but they shine oh so much brighter with Olivia and Tori at their side.

When us gals go in for our monthly maintenance we don’t have to tell them what we like done, they know us by name and hair!  But they always have the latest and greatest tools in case we change our minds, and that we do.

One of our faves though is if we are doing a color or highlight, we have about 30 to 40 minutes waiting time right?  So thank goodness, the spa is right there.  We’ll go get a quick brow wax or other small service while our hair is glamafying.

On our way out, we always stop at the accessory counter for the icing on the cake.  Locally made jewels is a nice touch to a lovely spa experience.

Dear Fashionistas,

This past Wednesday, Fashionista Chicago had the opportunity to attend a viewing party at Japonais for Bravo’s best new show, “Dukes of Melrose.” Christos Garkinos, co-owner of Decades INC. and star of the hit reality show, hosted the delicious event including sushi bites and champagne. If you love vintage, Christos is the “Robin Hood of fashion”; he seeks out star items in celebrities closets and resells them in his fabulous store (How jealous we are!) The episode featured at the premiere highlighted a stunning Alaïa corset from model Liza Mae Carlin. Everyone loved the show including Chicago’s own Aristotle Loumis, CEO of Ellison Sunglass Co. and of course US!

We can’t wait to see more of Dukes of Melrose, Wednesday nights 9:30 CST on Bravo!

St. Patrick’s Day Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes!

POSTED ON : March 14, 2013 | Posted in Chic Cuisine, Fashionista Chicago

Dear Foodies,

The South Side Irish Parade is back, Mint Green is SO in for Spring, Chicago’s March weather is off to an extremely pleasant surprise and St.Paddy’s Day is swiftly approaching….ahhh bliss.  So today, I’m going to share a recipe that’ll keep your imbibers as well as your sweet-teeth happy on the biggest drinking day of the year.  Then just go run that Shamrock Shuffle the following week to burn it off!

After discovering the recipe on Pinterest, I had to whip up a batch to test before I highlight these tasty treats on St. Patrick’s Day.  Every.single.person.RAVED. about these delicious and alcoholic desserts.

The recipe is a process, so allot some time and go in knowing there are multiple steps, but you can really pat yourself on the back after you showcase the decadence and your guests are beyond impressed.  Honestly, I’m sitting at Lovely A Bakeshop (a favorite cafe of mine) right now and the girl next to me just mentioned how her friend is going to make these and she can’t wait to try them. I butted in and let her know they’re gold…like at the end of a rainbow (to keep with theme here).

Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes

Yield: 24 cupcakes

Prep Time: 40 minutes | Bake Time: 17 minutes

For the Cupcakes:
1 cup Guinness stout
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
¾ cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1½ teaspoons baking soda
¾ teaspoons salt
2 eggs
2/3 cup sour cream

For the Whiskey Ganache Filling:
8 ounces bittersweet chocolate
2/3 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons butter, at room temperature
2 teaspoons Irish whiskey

For the Baileys Frosting:
2 cups unsalted butter, at room temperature
5 cups powdered sugar
6 tablespoons Baileys Irish Cream

1. To Make the Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line 24 cupcake cups with liners. Bring the Guinness and butter to a simmer in a heavy, medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the cocoa powder and whisk until the mixture is smooth. Cool slightly.

2. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt in a large bowl to combine. Using an electric mixer, beat the eggs and sour cream on medium speed until combined. Add the Guinness-chocolate mixture to the egg mixture and beat just to combine. Reduce the speed to low, add the flour mixture and beat briefly. Using a rubber spatula, fold the batter until completely combined. Divide the batter among the cupcake liners. Bake until a thin knife inserted into the center comes out clean, about 17 minutes. Cool the cupcakes on a rack.

3. To Make the Whiskey Ganache Filling: Finely chop the chocolate and transfer it to a heatproof bowl. Heat the cream until simmering and pour it over the chocolate. Let it sit for one minute and then, using a rubber spatula, stir it from the center outward until smooth. Add the butter and whiskey and stir until combined. Let the ganache cool until thick but still soft enough to be piped.

4. To Fill the Cupcakes: Using a 1-inch round cookie cutter (or the bottom of a large decorating tip), cut the centers out of the cooled cupcakes, going about two-thirds of the way down. Transfer the ganache to a piping back with a wide tip and fill the holes in each cupcake to the top.

5. To Make the Baileys Frosting: Using the whisk attachment of a stand mixer, whip the butter on medium-high speed for 5 minutes, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally. Reduce the speed to medium-low and gradually add the powdered sugar until all of it is incorporated. Add the Baileys, increase the speed to medium-high and whip for another 2 to 3 minutes, until it is light and fluffy.

6. Using your favorite decorating tip, or an offset spatula, frost the cupcakes and decorate with sprinkles, if desired. Store the cupcakes in an airtight container.

In good taste,
Jennifer Janko
